What Is a Role-Playing
Game?
|
|
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, a role-playing game (abbreviated RPG) is "a game in which players take on the roles of imaginary characters, usually in a setting created by a referee, and thereby vicariously experience the imagined adventures of these characters."
Role-playing can be described as interactive story telling.
Instead of having one reader and multiple listeners you have one storyteller (The Game Master or Dungeon Master) and multiple interacting players (Player Characters) that enhance the story dramatically.
|
 |
A RPG has no set time to play,
and there are no winners or losers. Although there may be times when a character
dies or becomes unplayable. No one person wins or loses. There are no game
boards to set up. The game is played on the endless playing surface of your
imagination!
|

|
Each player usually has a character sheet, which describes the character that you play and
polyhedral dice
(4-sided, 6-sided, 8-sided, 10-sided, 12-sided, and 20-sided.). The person
that hosts the game (The Game Master or Dungeon Master) acts as a referee,
storyteller and improvisational actor. The GM/DM describes the gaming
situations and the Players tell the GM/DM how and what they want their
characters to do in the story.
|
The dice are used to resolve
those actions to determine random outcomes and chances of success based on their
characters skills. Pencil and paper are used frequently to write down those
scores and progress as characters gain new skills and items.
The Players engage in a storyline solving puzzles, exploring dungeons, caverns,
futuristic or other fantastical locations, fighting monsters and winning treasures
or rescuing a princess! The possibilities are unlimited!
The games promote
group activity, reading, problem solving and social skills by working together as a team
to complete the adventures. These games involve and can help build
mathematical skills as the dice are rolled, numbers are added, modified,
subtracted, divided etc based on various calculations as the games are played.
These games can build friendships that last a lifetime!
